Baptisms

Christenings for children

“The church receives this child with joy!”

Everyone is welcome to have their children christened in their parish church. During the christening service your child will be baptized and with the support of the church, you and godparents, your child begins an amazing journey of faith.

All you need to know about planning and going to a Church of England christening can be found here churchofenglandchristenings.org It also includes information about another church service to say thank you for God for your baby.

At St Luke’s, christenings usually happen in the main Sunday morning service. That’s because we believe baptism is about becoming part of God’s family. It’s not just a one day celebration. It’s the start of an amazing journey with the God who loves you.

Adult baptism

Sometimes, seeing someone else baptized, deciding to have your own child baptized or being asked to be a godparent, can make you to think about your own journey of faith. If you were not baptized as a young child, you may be deciding now as an adult or teenager to make this commitment.

Whatever led you to this point, baptism marks the beginning of a journey with God which continues for the rest of our lives.

If you would like to find out more about being baptised or having your child christened , please contact Revd. Annie McCabe by email on vicar.stlukeandstpeter@gmail.com or telephone 07802 644525.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Christening?

A Christening is a service which takes place to welcome a child or adult into God’s family. During the service water is splashed onto the head of the person being Christened and they are welcomed into the church community. They may also receive a lighted candle as a symbol of the light of Christ.

Who can be Christened?

It’s not just for babies! Often older children or adults choose to become baptized if they weren’t as children.  Older children will be asked to make the promises themselves rather than having parents speak for them.

How much does it cost?

There is no charge for a Christening service, and it is usually held during a normal Sunday Church service.

What is the difference between being ‘Christened’ and ‘Baptized’?

There is no difference, there are just two different words for the same event!

Who do I contact if I want to hold a Christening at St Luke’s?

Please contact our Vicar, Annie McCabe by email on vicar.stlukeandstpeter@gmail.com or telephone 07802644525 and she will be happy to discuss it with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

I don’t come to St Luke’s Church, can I still get married here?

Yes! If you live within the Parish (the Somerstown area) you are welcome to get married here. If you live outside of the Parish it is still possible to get married here. Please contact us to discuss this.

How much will it cost?

For 2015/16 the legal cost which is set by the Church of England is £486. This includes the cost of the marriage certificate which is £4. There may be other extras you may wish to pay for such as having the organ played and having flowers in the church.

When can I get married?

By law you can get married any day of the week between 8am and 6pm. Before your wedding you have your ‘Banns’ read out in church three times (usually in the month prior to your wedding). Banns are an announcement of your intention to marry and a chance for anyone to object if there is a reason why the wedding may not legally take place.

Who do I contact about getting married at St Luke’s?

Please feel free to contact our Vicar, Annie McCabe on 07802644525 or vicar.stlukeandstpeter@gmail.com

Funerals

St Luke’s is here for you through one of life’s most difficult times.

If you would like us to help, please contact Revd. Annie McCabe on 07802644525 or vicar.stlukeandstpeter@gmail.com  You don’t have to be a church goer to have or to arrange a funeral in church. The Church of England is here for everyone, seeking to offer support, during and after the funeral itself for as long as it’s needed.

There is so much to think about when someone has died. There are formalities to complete, people need to be told, and a funeral to organise.

So whether you want to organise a funeral, are unsure about going to a funeral, or even want to plan your own funeral, there is sound advice and good ideas at  https://churchofenglandfunerals.org/

St Luke’s holds a yearly service of remembrance for those we have lost.  This usually takes place in November. If you would like further details on this please contact our administrator Alan Lihou on 07591 702020.
