History of St Luke’s church

St Luke’s church was completed in 1861 and consecrated in 1864.  It was squeezed in between a biscuit factory on the east side and a terrace of small houses on the west in this crowded working class district.  The layout of buildings and even the streets in the area has changed beyond recognition.

The building was designed by Thomas Hellyer following a competition.  The design – nave, aisles, apse and a ‘west’ gallery – has some references to Norman style.  The church is built with bricks but the exterior is of flint with stone dressings.  The interior shows brick in the columns and nave but mostly plasterwork in the aisles.

St Peter’s Church

We decided to redevelop St Luke’s Church because it was close to the City Centre and the Church of England ‘Charter Academy’ School. The Kings Church contacted the St Luke & St Peter PCC to ask if they could buy the St Peter’s site in Playfair Road, Somerstown, as their worship and outreach centre. This was agreed and the process for the closure of St Peter’s church and it’s eventual purchase is still ongoing.

Those who worshipped at St Peter’s moved to St Luke’s in April 2014. With the church open once more, services began again in this sacred place. We look forward to seeing where God will lead us as we seek to re-imagine the mission of God in this community and serve those who live, study and work in this area.
